Finger Pointing – June 18th

18 Jun

Hello and welcome to today’s Gallery Standouts! I haven’t had a huge amount of time to create this week but I can see from the galleries that there’s a lot of creativity going on out there! What always strikes me the most when I comb the galleries is that we all have stories to tell and memories to document. Happy and sad. Good and bad. Serious and funny. And that’s life. Never perfect but we make the most of the good and work around the not so good. My most favourite theme is the current. The everyday. And the wonderful moments that the everyday presents. But enough of my rambling, let me show you my picks for today – I do hope you’re inspired!

As we’re celebrating Father’s Day in most parts of the world this weekend, it seems only fitting for me to begin with a page celebrating fatherhood and I came across this beauty called Me & My Dad by angie i. Using a template to begin – I love all the repetition here with the arrows, stitched down and shadowed so perfectly – I also love how angie i has made this template her own, changing up the elements and adding some paint splatters, mist and scatters. Of course, the arrows direct the eye to the nucleus of the page… the photo of a dear dad and his daughter. The plaid and patterned paper layers compliment the arrows and add to the masculine look of the page while the simple title says it all. A fabulous page!

I’ve more than likely mentioned before that I like an artsy and layered combination. This layout by veer is a prime example of how these two techniques can work so beautifully together. The soft tones with the splatters and scribbles add an almost dreamlike quality and I love the perspective of the photo. Some gesso, blended text and wooden elements add interest and I also have a soft spot for the acrylic title! Finishing off with that little pink pearl is the perfect feminine touch. A wonderful treat to find this in the galleries tonight!

My next pick tonight is Legendary by TrishD. This action shot is perfect for the mask, making it look like this guy is bursting out of the page – I tell you, it’s only the yellow frame holding him back and it makes me want to shout go, go go! I love how the grungy numbers pick up the number 3 on his jersey and the scribbles, supported by the splatters of red have been perfectly positioned. A few stars here and there and a super simple one word title and this page is in a league of its own! I might add that I also want to use a soft pink backdrop for a masculine page – and have it work for me as well as this one does here… *sigh*.

Next up, the casual linear design of Together by Monique_L_ drew me in from the thumbnail. What a lovely layout to document spending time with friends. The design of this page is so eye catching and I love the yellow and teal colour combination with the black and white photo’s against the gorgeous white backdrop. The patterned paper top and bottom with little label and tape clusters are neat additions and I also like how the printed labels and banners lead me from one statement to the next, summing up the artists’ lovely memories of this time. Some darker splatters here and there with some wooden elements and a flair add a little depth and check out the title anchored down with some stitching. But wait… that journaling looks like handwriting to me! Fabulous!

3D Movie Time by valeriapiemonte has me looking and looking a looking, time and time again. Displaying perfect use of mixed media goodies, this layout has my eyes wandering from one interesting spot to the next. This design makes great use of the slide frames in the top quarter which is beautifully balanced with the rest of the artsy grunge of the rest of the page. I love the word art and text that spans the page and I’m constantly in awe of how different artists use these materials to create magnificent pieces of art. Another example of a predominantly masculine looking page with a couple of flowers, a piece of ribbon and a butterfly adding just a touch of femininity. Just terrific!

I love the contrast of dark and light in Thunderstorm by Maruma. Beautiful masking highlights the sweet photo and a smidging of teal breaks up the contrast to just the right degree. I like the use of the vertical word art and the hand drawn frame on the photo focuses the eye perfectly. A little journaling bottom right sits there quietly so as not to detract from the moment. Love that the date is there just inside the frame too! Perfect!

So there you have my picks for today. These are just a few of the fine examples that can be found in the galleries. Why not check them out yourself and leave a comment or two for the artists as well as for those whose pages you find particularly interesting? Thanks for popping by and I’ll see you next time!

    Hi Liz,
What a wonderful surprise. Thank you so much for choosing my layout for a GSO. Sometimes you can whip up something in a few minutes and other times work on a layout for a couple of hours and then trash it. This one took only half an hour. You just have to be lucky sometimes I guess,

You’re welcome! I love your layout and I understand totally how pages can come together in the blink of an eye while others take simply ages! Happens to me all the time!
